4.4 mi beginner-intermediate level hike through the west Limekiln Creek region between Monte Vista and Del Norte. A unique, open canyon geography with magnificent rock formations and brief panoramic views of the valley and distant mountain ranges. Enjoy meandering along this secluded, yet established trail system in a desert scrub environment.
5.5 mi challenging hike through the magical rock formations that make up the Penitente Canyon region. You will travel through the area's shallow, picturesque canyons, on and off trail, encountering class 2 and 3 boulder scrambling in a desert scrub and pine environment. Exploring encouraged, but guided is recommended for first-timers.
10-mile RT (easy) or 9.2-mile Loop (moderate) hike on an old forest road that is only open to non-motorized use most of the year. The canyon terrain slopes steeply up towards multi-tiered cliff faces and follows La Jara Creek nearly five miles on the road-trail to a streamside meadow, buttressed by impressive vertical, white cliffs. An
